17.05.11 Contextual

Mary Fedden

'Two lillies'

'The Black Jug'

'3 Brushes'

I love the apparent simplicity of Fedden's work , the directness and the familiar nature as it predominately deals with domestic items. They are clean and spacious with a great strength to them.

In relation to my own work I feel the strong line and shape are relevant along with the simplistic view. they also feel free and spacious which is what I'm trying to achieve in my work. The domestic objects within Fedden's work relate to the subject I'm studying as so the light and uncluttered composition. I am currently striving to get the balance right within my pieces , this beautiful balance is apparent within Fedden's work  and I really admire the uncomplicated feel she achieves with apparent ease.

Edward Bawden

Roses & Rue

Emma Nelson by the Fire

These paintings have a softness created by a beautiful softly diffused light that is calm and very atmospheric and an emotive subject matter that is familiar and homely . I'm trying to create these feelings within my work, by using soft colours and trying to give a feeling of space and light . I'm also using images which are personal to me to maintain an integrity within my subject which is also domestic.
I think these paintings are really beautiful and for me very nostalgic and if my work can stir an emoton in a viewer then I will be over he moon.

Ben Nicholson

1943-45 ( St Ives, Cornwall )

June 1961 ( green goblet and blue square )

The domestic image that Nicholson has painted obviously has a subject which is relevant to me . I love the clean lines of his work and the fact that you can see it is on the verge of being abstracted, the colours are so gentle  and the light and space so evident they are almost tangible.  These qualities are very important to me in my work as they are the abstract qualities that I need in a home.
I'm also interested in the way that Nicholson's work is abstracted, there's great looseness and clarity present at the same time due to the strong lines and shapes. I am interested in this looseness and have tried to capture it within the glass pieces that I have made with the combination of loose and strong shapes.I'm also keen to try and capture this feel  by drawing in layers as well as creating the glass in layers.
