22.05.11 Reflection and onwards

Reflecting on my home and what it means to me and how to ensure I meet my brief as fully as possible within the time available.
This you would have thought would have not been the easiest whilst cleaning my home today, however whilst facing an ironing pile Sir Edmund Hilary would have have been proud to scale, cleaning a bath that my daughter had to decided to use 3/4 bottle of baby oil in and trying to salvage my daughter's sheepskin rug that the cat had vomited a dead mouse onto , I managed to ponder what I have explored so far and have I used it to it's best advantage.

The print of my daughter with text from Winnie the Pooh  I'm happy with , it has a personal view of my home that also encompasses the feelings experienced within . The colours are from the palette of my home which is personal to me and I carried out some of the work within my home using domestic items. When carving the lino a plate gave me just the right circumference to draw around - this helps the piece to feel domestic along with the choice of material , the fabric is a cotton such as you'd use for bed-linen.

I have put another piece of glass into the kiln to represent the feelings of space and calm within my home, I'm hoping this will come out in one piece and that the finished result will be as I  imagined.
This started from the drawing of my bedroom window and encompassed the general windows and doors in my house which connect to outside. I need both of these environments , the air, the space , the sounds, the colours, the transition between the two spaces that is glass , so it seemed appropriate to use this material and explore the possibilities. We are obviously limited in time overall so exploration can only go so far but I'm pleased with the concept and hope I'll be pleased with the result.
I used domestic packaging from my cupboards to work out the best dimension within cost constraints as I wanted a large block that will stand alone and can be turned to enable you to look inside out or outside in. I could choose to look at the negative or positive within my home, however just as the unpleasant housework had a silver lining -in that it gave me space to think, sometimes the negative helps you to focus on the positive this piece shows that choice and the fact that it is calm and has space reflects my positive view of my home .

I've printed the 6 pieces of canvas that I originally cut and sewed into some of my home fabrics. I didn't like the red against the canvas it was too harsh ,which was the same feeling I had about the actual curtains. I chose them when I was pregnant, a time when virtually everything I bought was red , bizarrely, it was huge relief when the dog ate them as a pup.
I'm going to mount the prints onto foam board so they appear as a window looking onto the garden and then see whether they need anything further, or whether they work as a simple piece , showing separate views rearranged.
I like the looseness of the painting within this work combined with the snippets of conversation added in pen as I worked. , it captured a moment in the garden on a sunny day with family . I was really pleased with this work as it showed me I could be free in the way I worked and lose myself in the subject rather than thinking about it and getting caught up in detail.

I have a pretty good idea now of how my work is going to be put together for the presentation and the pieces that I'm still working on I have to keep that presentation in the back of my mind so it is a consideration not a drive.
I want all the senses to be represented in the view of my home so I'm working on bringing my pieces together with that in mind to give the viewer as full an impression as possible.
