Liz Toole
'Attachment'
'Awaiting'
'Moon Tree - Tea Green'
I love Liz Toole's work it has a softness, distinctive personality and the mediums really enhance her style of work, which has an elegant simplicity and a calmness.
I see aspects of these within my own work, the softness, and personality are becoming qualities that seem to be integral to me in the way I produce . The simplicity, although this artist has a much higher level of quality and complexity within what appears simple , I would hope that this is achievable for me in my own way through further study and exploration. I love the way she uses the materials to their advantage , the paintings being soft and fluid, whereas the prints have a much more dynamic quality to them particularly the lino as she really uses each cut to say something. There is a lot of space within her work created I feel , to enhance the simplicity, almost like a brilliant one liner - it doesn't need anymore.
I also really like the use of her titles - they're soft and humorous, very much her perspective of the world , yet they still allow people enough room to attach they're own needs to them, For me in the print above I see the softness that the word 'moon' lends to the image and the word tea immediately jumped out as something faintly ritual not just a colour - it gave a tranquility to the subject .
This body of work inspires me further explore that simplicity and embrace it as a quality, looking at other dimensions to enhance it , such as the way colour is applied, the title, the mood you create, the next step...
